Speech, actions and interpretations tend to be shaped by people’s own experiences, worldviews, memories, cultural values, expectations and interests. Our perspectives are tied to location and restricted, and our academic understanding is no exception.

Different perspectives question hegemonic discourses, traditional societal interpretations and values. In a plural society, however, the awareness of a diversity of perspectives and the ability to reflect upon one’s own fixed perspectives are essential for inclusive social cooperation. A diversity of perspectives increases the likelihood that the positive potential of heterogeneity can be transposed into society and into education. This requires an understanding of negotiation processes, methodologies and examples of good practice which meet the demands of a diversity of perspectives. It is important to see these interperspectival negotiation processes as embedded in socially-rooted power relationships. In educational situations such processes can also involve the consolidation of these power relationships in terms of discrimination against or subjugation of students or pupils, and the reproduction, renewal and legitimisation of hegemonic perspectives.

Schools therefore become places where many interpretations of the past, the present, and the future must also be addressed, negotiated or even learned. This challenge of multiperspectivity exists in all school subjects that help to construct meaning. The GEI annual conference 2023 ‘Considering Perspectives in Educational Media’ seeks to explore the different (subject-related didactical) research debates concerning the multifaceted dimensions of perspectives in education and educational media in and for schools. We welcome papers on the following aspects:

  1. Multiperspectivity and history teaching: Different interpretations and points of view related to the plurality of historical remembrance and contextualisation can sharpen the focus on differences but can also reveal connections. What are the opportunities in and limitations of a teaching of history that incorporates multiple perspectives? How can an academic culture be established in which, for example, postcolonial perspectives do not compete with the memory of the Holocaust?

  2. Multiperspectivity beyond history teaching: Questioning or even transcending one’s own perspectives, addressing sensitive or controversial subjects, allowing ambivalence, and bringing differing perspectives into conversation are all complex processes that are not confined to history teaching. What does multiperspectivity mean within the ambit of different subjects, how is it implemented and what are the conditions for its success? What role do educational media play in this process and how can they be critically examined in lessons? How can teachers be suitably trained to professionally tackle this challenging task?

  1. Multiperspectivity from a transnational perspective: Transnational approaches require knowledge of national didactic approaches and traditions as well as an understanding of their logic and their ability to meaningfully engage with or link themselves to other approaches. How do educational media and those involved with them address different strategies of perspective in ‘national’ didactic approaches? How can global education semantics contribute to a diversity of perspectives in national contexts?

  2. Perspectives of educational media in the (post)digital world: Digital educational media promise new opportunities in terms of adapting to different perspectives and expectations, and to individual learning requirements and needs. How can the persons and organisations involved in the process of developing digital educational media improve the portrayal in those media of the plurality of societal perspectives? How does the digital shift in school education affect new and participative forms of perspective change?

Papers on other, and more general, themes of the conference are also welcome. The conference will include a range of formats: from lightning talks to interactive discussion forms. Abstracts suggesting other preferred formats may also be submitted.

To submit a paper for selection, please send an abstract (max. 2000 characters including bibliography) and a CV (max. one page) by 26 June 2022 to jahrestagung@gei.de. The decision regarding which papers have been accepted will be made by 15 July 2022. Manuscripts must be submitted by 31 December 2022 in order to expedite the publication of the edited volume in the GEI’s peer-reviewed series Schriftenreihe (25,000 to max. 45,000 characters, including spaces)
