CIES 2019 - 63rd annual conference of the Comparative & International Education Society - Education for sustainability

Date :  du 14-04-2019 au 18-04-2019

Lieu :  San Francisco

Organisation :  Comparative and International Education Society (CIES)

Programme :

During its “Development Decade” of the 1960s, the UN advocated education as a driver of economic growth. But, over the past fifty years, questions have been asked with increasing urgency about what kind of development is promulgated through literacy, skills training, and formal schooling. What is the longer term cost of an education that promises – and sometimes delivers – productivity, industrialization, modernity and consumption? Who pays this price? What are the larger costs? And with what ultimate consequence for the planet?

The CIES 2019 San Francisco Keynote Lecture will feature Jeffrey D. Sachs, Professor of Sustainable Development at Columbia University and special adviser to the UN Secretary-General on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and will be preceded by a panel discussion on the work of UNESCO in the era of SDGs.

The Work of UNESCO in the Era of Sustainable Development Goals
This panel will discuss how UNESCO is upholding human rights and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals defined in Agenda 2030. Additionally, it will discuss how UNESCO is performing in a world in which multilateralism is questioned and new global challenges continue to emerge.
